Helping seniors during outages and loss of cell service

HONOLULU (KHON2) — On Kauai, Hurricane Lowell left many residents in the dark, with no outside connection during the worst possible time, including the elderly.

“A lot of people who are otherwise perfectly capable of living independently when a storm like this hits,” said Laurie Roberts, a volunteer with Malama Kauai.

“They lose power to things like hearing aids, and they can’t make a phone call, or maybe a CPAP machine that they use at night or an oxygen machine after a certain amount of days.”
