HONOLULU (KHON2) — It was not the typical day at Honolulu Hale during a City Council meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 24.
Paramedics had to jump into action to save a man who went into cardiac arrest.
The director of Honolulu’s Emergency Services Department was there and said the 60-year-old man became unresponsive.
“But it was a little startling, and I guess when it first happened, I had to say, ‘Is this really happening? Is this gentleman really without a pulse?’ And quite quickly, we all determined that, yes, that was the case and we needed to do what we needed to do with the AED and CPR,” Dr. Jim Ireland said.
Dr. Ireland said Honolulu police deputy chief Rade Vanic was also there and ran outside the chambers to grab the automated external defibrillator. One shock was delivered to the unresponsive man.
“And at that point, fire chief Hao who was also with us, joined us because this all happened very, very fast. And then he began CPR because the patient still did not have a pulse,” Dr. Ireland said.
