5 city park facilities closed due to vandalism

HONOLULU (KHON2) — In the last few weeks, three city park restrooms were forced to close due to vandalism.

Last week, Kamamalu Neighborhood Park’s restroom was set on fire and then it happened again at Lualualei Beach Park earlier this week.

And then the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Parks and Recreation confirmed the restroom at Kuhio Beach, near Ohua Ave, in Waikiki was closed due to clogged plumbing lines. DPR ststed that in the past, people would force clothes down the toilets and clog the lines.

The bathroom at Kuhio Beack Park will likely be closed through the weekend.

Two other city facilities remain closed.

Keehi Lagoon Beach Park restroom was set on fire back in 2016 and remains closed to this day.

The recreation building at Waimanalo Beach Park was also torched.

Brian Meachum goes to Keehi Lagoon Beach Park regularly for his daughters tournaments.

“Even the slide is broken, and there’s no restroom for her,” he said. “When I was a kid it didn’t seem to be a problem and to her its normal that you can’t use a public restroom.”
