HONOLULU (KHON2) — An hours-long barricade in Waikiki comes to an end earlier Wednesday morning, Jan. 31 with a man taken into custody.
The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 30, when a male suspect confronted a hotel employee who had been sent to his room, said the Honolulu Police Department.
The suspect barricaded himself on the 17th floor of the Waikiki Sunset Hotel.
Police told hotel guests there was an armed suspect in the building. Some guests told KHON they were a little shaken up, while others were waiting to get back into their rooms.
“We just came back to our hotel from the beach and they asked us not to go in,” said Canada visitor Linda Gormley. “We saw a lot of police come and then everyone is just standing outside and waiting to see what’s going to happen.”
Dozens of guests and residents were told they can stay in a Hilton Hawaiian Village conference room until the standoff was over.
Honolulu police and its Specialized Services Division spent the night at the scene and by 5 a.m. the next morning officers announced the barricade was over.
