Wahine hoops grinds out win over CSUF

The University of Hawaii women’s basketball team grinded out a 66-61 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Thursday night at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center despite missing a pair of post players in Imani Perez and Brooklyn Rewers.

Hawaii improves to 11-8 overall and 8-2 in Big West Conference play, while the Titans dropped to 7-13, including 3-7 in conference games.

Neither team led by more than eight on Thursday, with the contest coming down to the closing seconds. Hawaii clung to a one-point lead with less than 30 seconds remaining, but the Titans never took the lead as the Rainbow Wahine sealed the game by making their final six free throw attempts.

Ashlee Lewis had a game-high 25 points and 13 rebounds for CSUF, while Daejah Philips led UH with a season-high 22 points and three steals.

Hawaii will host UC Irvine on Saturday in a battle of the two squads tied atop the Big West standings. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
