HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Ala Wai Canal is teeming with life and it’s all thanks to the thousands of “Genki balls” tossed into its waters by the Genki Ala Wai Project.
The most recent sighting of marine life were a small hammerhead shark and an eagle ray.
Genki Ala Wai Project Technical Advisor Hiromichi Nago said they received reports about them in the canal a few of weeks ago.
“Those were sent to us or I’ve heard about it when I’m walking the canals,” said Nago. “I can’t be there every time watching the canal so it helps to have other people share the fishes and other mammals they see in the canal.”
Nago said with all the fishes returning, he’s not surprised, “they’re just following the food chain.”
Fishes, native oysters and even a monk seal are among the various animals that have been seen in the Ala Wai since the project began tossing Genki balls into the canal in 2019.
