High surf, high winds impacting beaches as HECO warns of possible outages

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The National Weather Service issued several watches, advisories and warnings for the weekend statewide.

On Friday, winds picked up quickly on Oahu, bringing dozens of kite and windsurfers out to the beach.

Hawaiian Electric also warned of potential outages due to the windy conditions.

“High winds can lead to falling trees and debris falling into power lines and damaging equipment and heavy rains can lead to flooding underground cables and other electrical infrastructure. So it all adds up to the potential for possible outages, rolling outages,” explained Darren Pai of Hawaiian Electric.

He said the company is making sure crews are are on standby ready to go.

“We’re also asking our customers to be prepared because even though it may seem sunny during the day, we know that uncertainty is what comes with the weather,” he continued.

The Board of Water Supply in Honolulu and the Department of Water Supply on Hawaii island are asking customers to conserve water if the power goes out.
