The initial call to strike on Jan. 10 had hundreds of nurses asking for better working conditions including higher pay, minimum patient-to-staff ratio, no mandatory overtime and more.

“We actually have people that have been working on the mainland. They left Kapiolani because of the conditions. Too hard, too much work, too much mandatory overtime,” HNA Union President Rosalee Agas-Yuu said at the time.

Kapiolani nurses stood their ground, picketing for seven days from Jan. 21 through Jan. 28.

During the week long strike, Kapiolani Medical Center employed a temporary workforce to ensure no patients would experience interruption during their care.

The strike ended just before 7 a.m. on Jan. 28 and nurses returned to their posts. During the strike, Kapiolani Medical Center said their care throughout the week was uninterrupted.
