Windy conditions sticking around, as overnight tides begin to peak

HONOLULU (KHON2) — For the second day in a row, the popular snorkeling spot, Hanauma Bay, was closed due to poor weather conditions.

“Aw man it took days for us to get a [reservation] ticket,” said Alaska visitor Titus Hermann, who had a reservation for Hanauma Bay Saturday morning. “It’s really difficult to get an online ticket now with the system, and unfortunately we came today and the weather shut things down here so hopefully we’ll try and get tickets again.”

Bayfront Beach Park and Onekahakaha were also shut down Saturday on Hawaii Island.

After seeing the conditions from a lookout, visitors understood why the area was closed.

“There’s no way I would be snorkeling down there, the waves are really high and the visibility doesn’t look like it would be the best anyways,” one visitor said.

The one two punch of surf and wind also canceled the canoe paddling championship in Hilo on Saturday.

“The unusual quality about this system is the swell direction we have 020 which is almost due north so as a result a lot of areas that aren’t commonly affected by high surf are being affected now,” explained Jeff Powell, National Weather Service Senior Meteorologist.
