HPD finds over 20 grams of suspected fentanyl at Kona International Airport

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Big Island police intercepted a 35-year-old man on Friday after he arrived at Kona International Airport at Keahole with over 20 grams of suspected fentanyl.

The suspect was deplaning a mainland flight when Hawaii police Area II Vice officers and Homeland Security Investigations Taskforce agents made contact.

HPD officials received consent to look through the suspect’s items, where they recovered 21.7 grams of suspected powdered fentanyl, worth more than $12,000.

According to the Drug Enforcement Agency, it only takes .02 milligrams of fentanyl to be considered a fatal dose.

The 35-year-old man was arrested for violating his court ordered bail conditions. HPD arrested and charged him with drug and bail offenses.

Around 7 p.m. on Friday, officials charged the man with one count each of violation of bail and second-degree promotion of a dangerous drug.

As of right now, the suspect is being held on a $52,000 bail and awaits his initial court appearance at the Kona District Court set for Monday morning.
