HONOLULU (ISLAND NEWS) — A local connection to an international disaster: Chile declared a state of emergency due to raging forest fires throughout the country. The Chilean National Disaster Prevention and Response Service said there are 161 active fires burning across the country. As of Sunday evening, 112 people were killed, and authorities say the death toll is likely to rise. Hundreds of people are missing. The fires broke out during a week of record high temperatures in central Chile.
