Trade wind gradually weakening while light winds take over this weekend

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The islands will see a continuation of breezy to locally windy easterly trade winds persisting until Wednesday night, followed by a gradual decrease in wind speeds on Thursday. By Thursday and into the weekend, the winds are expected to transition to gentler breezes. Showers riding in with the trade winds are forecasted to concentrate mainly over windward areas and mauka slopes, occasionally spilling over into leeward areas from time to time.

A high-pressure system, positioned northeast of the islands, will gradually shift southeastward.. As a result, the winds will weaken, leading to a reduction in wind speeds through Wednesday evening. Towards late this week and early next week, the passage of a couple of fronts far north of the state will further diminish the winds, resulting in a period light and variable winds this weekend. As the trade winds weaken later in the week and the wind pattern becomes more hybrid, afternoon showers over interior regions, driven by localized breezes, may become more widespread, especially as temperatures rise into the upper 70s to lower 80s.
