Pole crashes into Kailua wall, should power lines be buried?

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Some Kailua residents had a jarring wake-up call on Tuesday, Feb. 6 when a utility pole came crashing into a home.

The pole came down around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday on the corner of Kailua Road and South Kainalu Drive. Nearby residents did not want to go on camera but told KHON2 that it made quite the commotion.

“We heard a loud bang and I thought it was actually a car crash,” a neighbor said, “but we ran out after we saw the power went out in the house, noticed the power lines down and the pole on top of that wall across the street and thank goodness they have that wall!”

Over 1,500 Hawaiian Electric customers were initially affected but residents said power was quickly restored. Hawaiian Electric said they are investigating the cause of the damage — it had been pretty gusty in Kailua for the past few days.
