HONOLULU – (KHON2) The high-pressure system about 1000 nautical miles northeast of Oahu, will gradually weaken and shift eastward throughout the latter part of this week. As a result, a decrease in overall wind intensity from Thursday through the middle of next week.
A decrease in shower activity began this afternoon, with only isolated showers occurring. Light to moderate showers within the trade wind flow will mainly affect windward and mauka areas, with occasional spillover into leeward zones, especially at night. Due to the dry air mass, most lower elevation communities can expect little to no rainfall. However, areas such as Big Island’s Puna District, eastern upslope Maui, and Kauai’s Mount Waialeale may receive daily rainfall ranging from a few tenths of an inch to around half an inch.
The frequency of showers may slightly increase over the next couple of nights as slightly higher moisture levels move over the state ahead of an approaching shallow mid-upper level trough. This trough will cool the mid and upper levels, weakening the inversion, promoting deeper cloud growth, and enhancing shower chances. Although no significant rainfall is expected in the next several days, accumulations will be modest at best.
