Trunks decide touchdowns: Zoo elephants pick their Big Game winners

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Honolulu Zoo’s Asian elephants partook in the big game festivities Friday afternoon, selecting their Super Bowl picks for Sunday’s game.

Many gathered to witness the wisdom the elephants would bestow as they selected their winners, including UH Football Head Coach Timmy Chang and Associate Head Coach Chris Brown.

The true stars of the show however were Mari and Vaigai the Honolulu Zoo’s Asian elephants.

Mari and Vaigai were presented with watermelons with the the logo of the Kansas City Chiefs, the AFC champions, and the other with the logo of the San Francisco 49ers, the NFC champs.

The logos were etched into the watermelon by Tommy Notario, the lead cook from Kapahulu Market.

After much contemplation – and going back and forth to give the crowd a show – both elephants chose the Kansas City Chiefs watermelon.

Mari did spit out her watermelon, but ultimately their picks were for the Chiefs.

However, just like an elephant, KHON2 News never forgets, and does remember last years pick from the elephants was incorrect.
