The Eddie might go! Weather reports look favorable for rare event

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Having only happened 10 times since 1985, The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational is arguably one of the most anticipated events on the island.

The requirements for The Eddie to take place are rare; surf height must consistently reach at least 20 feet within the typical timeframe of December to February.

The last competition was held on Jan. 22, 2023, with North Shore lifeguard and surfer Luke Shepardson taking home the coveted first-place title and trophy, and former Eddie winner John John Florence taking home second.

Will it be Florence’s chance for redemption? Or is it Shepardson’s title for the taking?

According to weather reports, we may be able to find out much sooner than anticipated.

The Eddie is looking possible for Thursday.

An official green light should be given Monday, Jan. 11, from Eddie officials.
