The main road to Hawaiʻi Community College–Pālamanui is now named after the late Rockne Freitas. Freitas was a former Hawaiʻi CC chancellor and played a key role in developing the campus on Hawaiʻi Island. Before Pālamanui opened in August 2015, West Hawaiʻi didn’t have a permanent college. The road was named in a ceremony on February 10, where the new Rockne Freitas Way sign was revealed.

Raynette “Kalei” Haleamau-Kam, the director of Hawaiʻi CC–Pālamanui, spoke highly of Freitas’ leadership and dedication to the community. She stressed the need to continue his work and honor his legacy. Freitas was known for inspiring people to make a difference in their community.

The UH Board of Regents approved the naming in August 2023. Freitas, who died in 2022, held many leadership roles at UH, including serving as Hawaiʻi CC chancellor from 2004 to 2010. He played a key role in securing funds and partnerships for the Hawaiʻi CC–Pālamanui campus.

Freitas also influenced Taupouri Tangarō, the current director of Hawaiian culture and protocols engagement for Hawaiʻi CC and UH Hilo. Tangarō developed the kīpaepae ceremony, which is now used for special occasions about 50 times a year. Tangarō praised Freitas for his hands-on leadership and his pride in integrating Hawaiian culture and academics.
