According to the DOH, there’s been a reported outbreak of gastrointestinal illness on the Queen Victoria cruise ship which arrived to Oahu earlier Monday morning.
This fecal-oral virus can be easily spread through direct contact with a person, food, water, or environmental surfaces. The DOH said most cases resolve on their own, but proper sanitization and hydration can help with prevention.
DOH said they do not consider the cruise ship’s presence to be a threat to residents but they are monitoring it along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Those on the ship became ill during the ship’s voyage between Florida and San Francisco from Jan. 22 to Feb. 6. As of last week, 129 passengers and 25 crew members had become ill.
“Cases of gastrointestinal illness on the Queen Victoria had decreased substantially by the time the ship arrived in San Francisco,” said the DOH in a statement. “VSP monitored the ship into the next voyage to Hawaii to ensure there was no carryover illness.”
