The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UH Mānoa) opened the renovated Alexander Waterhouse Sports Performance Facility. The updated facility will enhance training for student-athletes in the Rainbow Wahine and Rainbow Warrior programs. The renovation was marked with a dedication ceremony at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center on February 13.
The Waterhouse facility, built in 1994, underwent a $3.3 million renovation last year. The facility now has 24 Samson Power Racks and a new nutrition center in the 10,000-square-foot training area. It will serve the department’s 500 student-athletes across 21 sports programs.
UH Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Tommy Heffernan shared his positive views about the renovation, stating it was overdue and would benefit the student-athletes. The facility has over 22,000 pounds of free weights and each of the 24 power racks has various resistance training modes, allowing efficient use of time and space.
Athletics Director Craig Angelos emphasized the facility’s importance, stating it is the most used facility in the athletics department and impacts all athletes. Kahu Kordell Kekoa presided over the blessing ceremony, with remarks by Heffernan, UH President David Lassner, Angelos, State Sen. Ron Kouchi, and UH women’s volleyball player Kate Lang, representing the UH student athletes.
