State’s third kauhale for homeless community opens in Kalihi

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The State’s third housing option for the homeless community of Hawaii has now opened its doors in Kalihi.

Ho’okahe Leo on Middle St. will provide housing, as well as around-the-clock security, a laundry facility and a place for people to shower, even if they don’t live in the new community.

The facility will have 20 units, but there are hopes of opening up more kauhale communities.

“This is a dream that we had five years ago and it’s finally coming true,” said resident Laura Mae Duclayan. “It just took a lot of time patience and humbleness.”

With plans to continue opening these housing options during his time in office, Governor Josh Green said he hopes to reduce homelessness in Hawaii by 50%.

“This place will change me in many ways bc it will give me housing, it’ll give me a shelter over my head when I didn’t have one just some time ago,” added Duclayan.
