Opinion: SB 1008 Will Impact Air Travel

The cost of air travel from Honolulu to LAX, California, is about $460, depending on the time of the year. With increasing jet fuel prices, ticket prices will increase if the Hawaii State legislature passes Senate Bill 1008. Senate Bill 1008 is a carryover bill from 2023.

Here is an excerpt of Senate Bill 1008.

Senate Bill 1008:

The purpose of this Act is to establish a carbon tax on aviation fuel to continue the State’s leadership in global greenhouse gas emission reduction actions. All tax revenue from the carbon tax will be collected under Chapter 243, Hawaii Revised Statutes, as it pertains to jet fuel, to be set aside in the airport revenue fund.

If the State increases the tax on jet fuel, airlines will pass the cost increase to the consumer. Will the carbon tax reduce the gas emissions from airplanes?

As a thank you, the senate bill provides a tax-deductible of $50 in return for taxpayers earning less than $60,000 per year. There is a deductible tax scale for all income earners.
