Fatal Shark Attack Near Goat Island

Tamayo Perry, a former professional surfer famed for riding through the massive Pipeline waves, tragically died in a shark attack while surfing on Oahu’s North Shore. The incident occurred near Goat Island and was reported by Shayne Enright of the Honolulu Emergency Services Department.

A Legacy in Surfing and Safety

Tamayo Perry was a celebrity figure in the surfing community at the age of 49. Along with his wife, Emilia Perry, he had entered Oahu’s shore to offer surfing lessons. Perry’s career highlights include winning the Pipeline Master trials in 1999. The Pipeline, known for its dangerous waves, became Perry’s specialty.

Brendan Buckley, editor of Stab Magazine, noted Perry’s influence, saying, “He was one of the top people out there. He got some of the craziest waves of his era.” Buckley also remarked that while Perry was not competing for world titles, he was highly respected for his ability to conquer big, challenging waves. Perry’s dedication to surfing safety and conformity was evident in his work.
