Officials said the first call came in at 9:51 p.m. after a suspected firework “possibly exploded in a person’s hand.”

Paramedics treated a 14-year-old male who suffered burns to his hand from an apparent firework blast.

He was treated with advanced medical care and transported to a trauma center in serious condition.

In a separate incident, a 19-year-old male is in critical condition after suffering a severe arm injury, also from a suspected firework blast.

Paramedics then headed to a call just before 11:30 p.m. where a 34-year-old man was in serious condition after suffering a traumatic hand injury from a suspected firework blast.

Multiple ambulances and Honolulu Fire Department units were called to the Salt Lake area just a few minutes into the new year to respond to a mass casualty event.
