The final day of the Sony Open in Hawaii was a milestone for Chen Kim, marking the first time the Kaimuki native played on a Sunday in the tournament.
Kim entered the day at 4-under par, with hopes of climbing the leaderboard after a strong front nine that featured three birdies. However, back-to-back bogeys on the back nine slowed his momentum before he closed with a birdie, finishing 2-under for the day and 6-under for the tournament.
The former Kaimuki Bulldog placed 53rd out of 143 golfers, a significant achievement as he made the weekend cut in just his third Sony Open appearance.
“It was a lot of fun. I had a lot of friends and family come out, and it was just nice to play at home,” said Kim. “Would’ve been great to play a little better, but for the first event of the season, I think I held it together pretty well. Hopefully, this leads to bigger things. This event will always be a stop in my books—to come back home and play in front of the locals brings back a lot of memories. There’s definitely some emotion tied to it, and this will forever be special to me.”…
