Dozens of retail workers on Maui to lose jobs as surf stores prepare to shutter

MAUI, Hawai’i (Island News) — Nearly every clothing rack and merchandise display at the Honolua Surf Company on South Kihei Road holds a sale sign as the store awaits its closure in the coming weeks.

Jasmine Pentecostes manages the location, one of the 10 surf shops on Maui preparing to shutter its doors, after its mainland operator, Liberated Brands LLC, filed for bankruptcy. The other stores include three other Honolua Surf Company locations, two Volcom, two Quiksilver and two Billabong.

“It’s really sad to see everywhere closing down, especially like, how long I’ve been with the company. I’ve been with the company for almost four years,” Pentecostes said.

Maui Chamber of Commerce President Pamela Tumpap called the shutdowns “a big hit to our community.”…
