Bill to develop Kakaʻako dies in State Senate

KAKAAKO, Hawaii (KHON2) — State Senate lawmakers have deferred a measure that would allow residential development in a portion of Kakaʻako, leading to a group of community members to celebrate.

Current law prohibits development makai of Ala Moana Boulevard, with the now-deferred measure looking to change that. The measure was backed by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, which was given portions of the land back in 2012.

Bill aims to lift law banning Kakaako makai development

Community members against the development say the bill’s demise is a victory for Kakaʻako, but they say that the fight is only over for the time being.
