DHHL to award 700 leases for Kapolei homesteads

HONOLULU (KHON2) – Those who qualify for Hawaiian Housing could soon secure a lease before their home is even built.

The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands is expected to award 700 project eases for Ka’uluokaha’i and Kaupe’a homesteads in Kapolei.

The Department says the new approach gives families time to financially prepare while their homes are being built, and ensures that beneficiaries can pass their homestead to their successors.

According to DHHL, the project leases directly impact those currently on DHHLʻs waitlist, that’s more that 29-thousand ʻohana. By having a project lease in hand, beneficiaries will be able to pass this down to a successor ensuring this home stays in their family for generations. This process has been a long time coming for many of our families. Two being awarded this weekend have been waiting since the 1950s.
