In wake of shooting, Waikiki businesses devise new security plan to offset police shortage

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The arrest of a 19-year-old man involved in a Sunday shootout between two groups on Kalakaua and Seaside avenues in Waikiki is welcome news for residents and workers who felt left in the dark about danger in their neighborhood.

Community leaders called the incident a “one-off,” but one that sparked serious concerns.

“It was chaotic, it was fearful. Shots rang out and there’s people still on the street leaving dinner or even leaving some of these retail shops,” said Trevor Abarzua, president and executive director of the Waikiki Business Improvement District Association. “That rarely rarely happens in Waikiki, but unfortunate that it did.”…
