Waikiki Shell reopens after a 6-month renovation

HONOLULU (Island News) — The Tom Moffatt Waikiki Shell is back after six months of renovations, just ahead of their first performance tomorrow.

This iconic venue now has brand-new premium seating near the stage along with a full electrical service upgrade and modifications to its orchestra pit. The City and County of Honolulu set aside about $585,000 to the project, with most going towards electrical upgrades and other funds to updating theater equipment.

“Listening to people reminisce about their favorite memories like watching a concert with a bright, full moon rising above Diamond Head in the background. It reinforced our resolve to continue investing in the maintenance of such an iconic facility,” said Dita Holifield, Director of Enterprise Services.

This, of course, was a team effort. For example, the Hawaiian Electric Company coordinated with project manager Department of Design and Construction to replace an old transformer. Pacific Architects, Inc. designed the new seating and safety measures, while Molina Engineering built it up…
