An elderly man’s hiking excursion took a perilous turn off the scenic Makapuʻu Lighthouse Trail in Hawaiʻi Kai, leading to a dramatic rescue operation. As reported by the Honolulu Fire Department, a distress call was made to 911 on the morning of Thursday, prompting a swift response from various units.
Six units comprising 17 personnel were dispatched to search for the man, who was in his 80s and had wandered away from the established trail. The first responders arrived at the scene by 11:03 a.m. and began their ascent to locate the missing hiker. They had to quickly prepare a nearby landing zone to potentially facilitate air rescue operations, a move that underscored the urgent need to locate and assist the missing individual.
According to officials, the search teams were eventually able to locate the hiker who was found in a critical state, displaying no signs of a pulse or breathing.
