Military’s plan for rocket testing on Johnston Atoll raises alarm

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Johnston Atoll, with its Hawaiian name Kalama, is about 825 miles southwest of Hawaii in the Central Pacific.

The unincorporated U.S. territory is in a preserve called the Pacific Islands Heritage Marine National Monument, which is a crucial breeding ground for seabirds and other wildlife.

But the U.S. Air Force wants to build two commercial rocket landing pads at Johnston Atoll to test giant cargo rocket landings for its Rocket Cargo Vanguard program…
