Hawaii senior scammed out of $58k from ‘sweepstakes win’

HONOLULU (Island News) — A local kupuna lost more than $58,000 after he fell for a sweepstakes scam.

Honolulu Police Department (HPD) reported that the scam involving an 84-year-old man took place sometime in the first half of the year (between Jan. 13 and June 24, 2025). The man was contacted by individuals, claiming that he won a multibillion-dollar sweepstakes.

Because he believed the prize was legitimate, he sent multiple payments that totaled more than $58,000 to cover the supposed taxes and fees. The tens of thousands of dollars were wired and mailed to various individuals across the U.S…
