Koko Head Trail closed to address safety hazards that badly injured a child

HAWAII KAI, Hawaii (Island News) — The Koko Head hiking trail is closed until further notice after an 8-year-old boy was critically injured over the holiday weekend.

The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is making repairs to a bunker atop Koko Crater Tramway, better known as the Koko Head Stairs, where a boy fell 20 to 40 feet, critically injuring himself. Officials are working to seal up that entry point.

The accident happened Saturday, July 5 when the boy fell and was airlifted off the mountain. For those arriving at the popular trail in the days since his fall, a HPD officer will turn you away…
