HONOLULU (Island News) — Early Friday morning is starting off mostly dry and quiet across the islands, thanks to a ridge of high pressure and some drier air moving in with moderate trade winds.
High clouds can be seen moving across the sky, coming from thunderstorms southwest of the islands and being carried by winds high up in the atmosphere. On Thursday evening, the Big Island’s windward areas, especially around South Hilo, got a little bit of rain — about a quarter to half an inch.
The trade winds are generally light, except in windier spots like the usual windward areas, mountain gaps and the leeward sides where gentle breezes blow offshore.
Things are expected to change starting today. Rain chances will go up over the weekend, especially for Oahu and Kauai, as a weak weather system develops north of the islands. This system, along with more moisture coming in on the trade winds, will likely bring more rain from late Friday night through Sunday — mainly to the western islands…
