Oahu fireworks buyback program part of proactive effort to improve public safety

HONOLULU (Island News) — The impact of fireworks in many cases knows few boundaries.

A fireworks explosion on Keaka Drive on Jan. 1, 2025 resulted in multiple deaths, including a child and several others being injured.

The tragic event occurred at a New Year’s Eve event. Those believed to be involved reportedly ignited illegal fireworks in Aliamanu.

Mourning immeasurable losses, Nelson Benigno told Island News earlier this year, “A little boy died. He was just three years old and the worst part is, the son and mom together, they died. The same thing with my wife, sister, they died together, they died in that garage. Never made it to the hospital.”…
