Boy, 17, faces life sentence for Makaha shooting death

HONOLULU (KHON2) — An Oʻahu Grand Jury indicted a 17-year-old boy for murder and multiple attempted murder charges on Aug. 6, stemming from a Makaha shooting in May.

Jasper Solberg is accused of participating in the shooting death of 19-year-old Marcus Araneta, as well as the attempted murders of Kaneala Afong-Pontes-Aliavanu, 21, Rose Taetuna, 39, Talan Dekneef Perez, 19 and Khyzen Kunewa Gualdarama, 19.

Suspects in deadly Makaha shooting make first court appearance

Solberg, as well as Olsen Burrows-Fonoimoana, 20, Styren Stevens, 19 and Matthew Moon, 20, attacked the victims while they were at home on May 28, the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney said. The alleged attack killed Araneta and injured the others.

The total charges against Solberg are as follows:

  • Attempted Murder in the First Degree
  • Murder in the Second Degree
  • Three counts of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree

The first attempted murder charge carries a life sentence without the possibility parole, while the remaining charges carry a sentence of life with the possibility of parole, the prosecuting attorney’s department said.
