State Land Survey Division digitizes old maps

HONOLULU (Island News) — You’re probably familiar with iMaps or Google Maps. Now, the state is working to do something similar. But instead of helping people get directions, it will help landowners get survey information about any parcel of land.

Surveyor Meyer Cummins showed some of the 100,000 maps at the Department of Accounting and General Services (DAGS) Land Survey Division. “Our maps go back to 1871 when our office was created, and some maps were created before that and deposited with our office, and we still maintain them,” Cummins said.

It has about 90,000 maps digitized that will soon get uploaded to new mapping software. “By having a service like this, you can start with your address, zoom to it, click on it and get all the information that you need, and it’s available for free online,” Cummins explained…
