A celebration of life for Tutu Bert, co-founder of Oahu’s first homeless shelter

HONOLULU (Island News) — A celebration of the life of an extraordinary woman.

Dozens came to say a hui hou to Roberta DuTeil, more affectionately known as Tutu Bert. DuTeil and her husband, the late Fr. Claude, started the Peanut Butter Ministry in the 1970s on Smith Street in Downtown Honolulu. Volunteers offered peanut butter sandwiches and other services to homeless individuals.

The DuTeils later turned that ministry into the Institute for Human Services (IHS) and opened Oahu’s first homeless shelter in 1986.

In 2016, three medical respite homes, named after Tutu Bert, opened for fragile kupuna after they were released from the hospital. Many find themselves homeless for the first time…
