Understanding the trail basics

The Lanikai Pillbox trail, officially known as the Kaiwa Ridge Trail, spans just 0.8 miles each way, with an elevation gain of 636 feet. Most hikers complete the round trip in 60–90 minutes, reaching the first pillbox in about 20–30 minutes.

Don’t let the short distance fool you—some sections are steep and can become quite slippery following heavy rainfall. The trail earns its intermediate rating from the sustained steep grade right from the trailhead.

The Lanikai Pillbox Trail is the single most difficult hike to find parking for on Oahu. Residential streets have increasingly restricted visitor parking, creating a major headache for hikers. There’s unfortunately no parking near the trailhead, and parking along private residential streets is frowned upon.
