HONOLULU (KHON2) — There was a sea of students in orange shirts at Hau‘ula Elementary School on Oct. 22, Unity Day, as staff hosted a surprise assembly to honor Hawaii’s very own “Kindest Kid in America.”
Unity Day is celebrated during Bullying Prevention Month, encouraging kindness and acceptance. For students and staff at Hau‘ula Elementary, that message is spread daily by one of the kindest kids in America — sixth grader Dejaycion “DJ” Moses.
“He seems to have this way of knowing who needs a friend that day or who needs to be checked in with and when I see him he has a gentle spirit,” said Uilani Kaitoku, Hau‘ula Elementary School’s principal. “His actions verify and confirm that he’s someone that has been through some things but it doesn’t define who he is because today we have a student that has risen. He rises to the occasion and he continues to be a great role model for other students.”
The school asked all the students to write down examples of kindness and the name of someone who displayed it on campus. DJ’s name came up the most and was nominated for the award.
When his name was called as Hawaii’s 2025 honoree, DJ looked around in shock before standing up…
