Speed limits to drop in four areas on Hawaiʻi Belt Road

HILO, Hawaiʻi (KHON2) – Drivers on Hawaiʻi Island will see new speed limits on Hawaiʻi Belt Road as the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation prepares to lower speeds in four areas.

The changes are meant to improve safety in neighborhoods and areas with higher pedestrian activity, according to HDOT.

New limits

Two sections that are currently 55 mph will drop to 45 mph. These sections include:

  • In between mile markers 9.2 and 9.5 near Old ʻOnomea Road and Kulaʻimano Homestead Road in Pepeʻekeo.
  • In between mile markers 40.9 and 41.9 near the Māmane Street and Kahawailiʻiliʻi Stream Bridge in Honokaʻa.

Two other sections will go from 45 mph to 35 mph:

  • In between mile markers 6.3 and 6.7 near Kapue Bridge and Kōpilimai Road in Pāpaʻikou.
  • In between mile markers 9.6 and 10.9 near Kulaʻimano Homestead Road and Sugar Mill Road in Pepeʻekeo.

Timeline

The new limits will start 30 days from the announcement, once HDOT installs the new signs.
