Family mourns man beaten to death in Waikiki, suspect denies guilt in murder case

WAIKIKI, Hawaii (Island News) — Ishmael Luavasa, the man accused of brutally beating Christian Alejandro Coronel to death in Waikiki, pleaded not guilty on Thursday to murder in the second degree.

Luavasa’s trial date is set for Jan. 19, 2026. This happened in court as family and loved ones mourn the loss of Christian Alejandro Coronel, the 50-year-old man who was hoping for a fresh start in Hawaii.
