Honolulu Tea Shop Fined $2,000 for Unauthorized Removal of Food Safety Placard on Keawe St.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Health (DOH) Food Safety Branch has fined GFL Tea LLC, doing business as Sun Tea Mix at 400 Keawe St. in Honolulu, $2,000. The fine is for removing a yellow ‘conditional pass’ placard without authorization. The placard was posted on July 30, 2025, due to several food safety violations. These included not having a certified person in charge, an inaccessible handwashing sink, improper food protection, incorrect chlorine sanitizer levels, and not enough hot water for ware washing.

A DOH inspector found the placard missing on August 2, 2025. Removing a placard is a violation of the Hawaiʻi Food Safety Code. The company has 20 days to request a hearing to contest the notice. Peter Oshiro, environmental health program manager, said placards…..
