Roads reopen after Kahuku bus crash causes downed poles, power lines

KAHUKU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Kamehameha Highway near Kuilima Drive reopened to contraflow traffic Thursday afternoon after a city bus crashed into a utility pole, severing it at the base and leaving power lines in the roadway.

The crash happened around 10:30 a.m. near Turtle Bay Resort. There were no passengers on the bus at the time of the collision, according to the Honolulu Police Department.

The highway was closed in both directions for hours while Hawaiian Electric crews worked to repair downed poles and power lines.

Police said the closure was expected to last a minimum of three hours.
