‘Find their spines’: HGEA presses DOE on Moanalua assault

HONOLULU (KHON) — Following an upset parent’s assault of a Moanalua High School associate athletic director, the Hawaii Government Employees Association is demanding action from the Department of Education.

“We’ve been sounding the alarm along with the teachers of the Union for a long time about escalating threats and potential violence against school employees,” said HGEA Executive Director Randy Perreira.

Man, 60, indicted for alleged assault on HPD officer

On Dec. 15, Perreira sent Superintendent Keith Hayashi a letter demanding accountability.

“We appreciate that you immediately reacted to the situation,” Perreira said. “Words are easy; however, currently we are demanding to know what steps the department intends to take to prevent such instances from occurring again in the future.”

Hayashi called the incident appalling and said the DOE “will not tolerate behavior that threatens the safety of our students, staff or families.”…
