HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands will open its first transitional shelter for homeless waitlisters, with a blessing ceremony scheduled for Monday at the federally funded $6.4 million facility.
The shelter, called Hale O Kumumamo, is located on Yorktown and Enterprise Street in Kalaeloa. The property was previously quarters for visiting U.S. Navy officers and has been mostly unoccupied for years.
The facility has 18 rooms, a room for a property manager, and a shared laundry room.
Addressing community needs
“Obviously, it’s not an exciting situation where you’re trying to help the homeless. It’s more a reality check and a reality effort on our side to address the needs in our community,” said Kali Watson, Department of Hawaiian Home Lands chairman…
