Updated sewer fees now in effect in Honolulu

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The increased sewer fees approved by the Honolulu City Council are now in effect as 2026 is in full swing.

Originally approved in June 2025, the updated sewer fees plan raised the fees by 6% this year, 2026, with future annual increases weighing in at 7.5%, 8.5%, 9%, 9% and 9%.

Increased costs were attributed to critical infrastructure changes required throughout the island, with $2.5 billion in upgrades fixing up the Sand Island sewage treatment plant. An additional $10 billion will be used for sewer line improvements and other projects island-wide.
