NYE investigations ongoing, videos still being looked at

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Honolulu law enforcement officials say this year’s New Year’s Eve fireworks activity was noticeably quieter than years past, pointing to stronger laws, increased enforcement and more community cooperation.

Hawaiʻi Department of Law Enforcement Director Mike Lambert says participation in illegal fireworks appeared to drop by as much as 30 to 40 percent compared to last year, exceeding expectations.

“I thought it would break loose closer to 10 p.m., but where I was, it was around 11:30 p.m., and we knew we were going to lose functional control of it, but I was glad it ended, and it was sad we did have injuries, but at least were trending in the right direction,” Lambert said.

Honolulu Police confirm there were two arrests related to fireworks. Records show the arrests happened in Haleʻiwa and the Ala Moana area. Officials have not yet released final numbers for citations or cases, which will be released on Monday…
