HTLA Visitor Public Safety Conference: Crime is down with efforts to further reduce to come

WAIKIKI, Oahu (KHON2) — Waikiki is one of Oahu’s busiest areas and a hot destination for tourists, so keeping it safe and as crime-free as possible has always been a top priority, which has so far seemed to be working.

DFS pulls out of Hawaii after more than 60 years

“Crime is down in Waikiki, people feel safer, people feel like things are getting better,” said Trevor Abarzua, President of the Waikiki Business Improvement District. “I think a lot of it is due to the partnerships that we’ve created with HPD and Department of Law Enforcement, and some of the newer initiatives coming online.”

Programs include Safe and Sound Waikiki, increased Aloha Ambassadors and security presence.

“We always know we can do better, but statistics have shown that crime has decreased,” said Mufi Hannemann, Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association CEO, and former Honolulu mayor. “There will always be isolated incidents of some violent crime that occurs, but we don’t want to see that happen.”…
