Man charged, accused of setting off explosion in Kakaako; police find fireworks

HONOLULU (Island News) — The man who is accused of starting an explosion in Kakaako after an object was thrown into a building’s driveway is facing multiple criminal charges. Police retrieved fireworks and an unregistered gun during a search warrant.

The explosion took place at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 916 Queen St in Kakaako, according to a preliminary police report. A man, later identified to be 38-year-old Christopher Cabacungan, threw an “unknown canister” into the covered driveway of an apartment building.

The outside of the concrete apartment building, including lighting and wiring, were damaged from the explosion. The incident did not result in any injuries…
